What is the Musculoskeletal System?

Our bones, muscles, tendons, joints and ligaments make up the musculoskeletal system. These organs give our bodies structure and the ability to move about. There are three types of muscles, cardiac in the heart, skeletal attached to the bones, and smooth found in the lining of our organs. Bones also provide protection for our internal organs. For example, the skull protects the brain and the ribs protect the heart and lungs.

What is the Nervous System?

Our body is able to feel, see, hear, taste and smell because of the nerves that supply our sensory organs. These nerves send messages to the Central Nervous System (CNS), which is the brain and the spinal cord, and receive a response. The nervous system also aids in body movement and all body functions such as thoughts, sleeping, walking and breathing.

FACT: Want to build muscle mass? Oatmeal is a great food to add to your dietary rotation to help build muscle, lose fat and help prevent diabetes. It is a low glycemic index food, meaning it is a carbohydrate that will not spike your blood sugar levels. Oatmeal can help increase satiety making you less hungry and helps preserve muscle with a low glycemic index of 58.

How can lifestyle affect your musculoskeletal system?

A sedentary lifestyle can lead to both muscle and bone wasting. It’s like the second language you learned in high school, use it or lose it! Get up and move! Walk around the block or sit and do arm circles while you watch television, every little bit of exercise helps. Drinking cola and coffee can also negatively affect your bones. The exact reason is still unclear, but scientist believe it is either the phosphoric acid in cola that leaches calcium out of the bones, or the caffeine in these beverages that may be the culprit. It is recommended to drink less than 400 mg of coffee and cola per day. That is equivalent to 4 cups of coffee or 2 colas. Cutting coffee and cola completely from the diet is the best recommendation! Replacing them with drinks such as fortified orange juice or almond milk will help keep your calcium intake up and your bones strong! Not to mention avoiding the artificial colors and sugar in cola would be additional benefits to cutting them out altogether. A great alternative to soda is carbonated water with a splash of juice for flavor. Source
